French documents we translate

Document Name on the document Often used for
Birth certificate Acte de naissance (copie intégrale or extrait) Visa, citizenship
Family record book Livret de famille Family details
Marriage certificate Acte de mariage Partner visa
Driving licence Permis de conduire Driving, car hire, licence transfer
Criminal record extract Extrait de casier judiciaire (bulletin n° 3) Visa character requirements

What our translator checks

  • Full copy or extract: a copie intégrale includes the marginal notes (marriage, divorce, name change); an extrait does not. We translate exactly what you provide.
  • Marginal notes (mentions marginales), translated in full.
  • Licence categories (AM, A, B…) and dates of each category, translated as on the card.

Licence and visa rules in short

  • Licence transfer: France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada are on the Austroads list of recognised jurisdictions: a licence from these countries can be transferred without tests (other conditions apply). If it is in French, the transfer still needs an English translation. See which licences convert without a test.
  • NSW: for a NSW licence transfer, only the Free Translating Service and Multicultural NSW are accepted, not private translations such as ours. See what NSW accepts.
  • Visas: if you apply from Australia, Home Affairs asks for the translator's NAATI practitioner number on each translation, which ours show.

Working holiday makers

France is one of the top countries of the Working Holiday (417) visa. Working holiday makers are not eligible for the free government translation service, so a private certified translation is the usual option for a licence or car hire.

Price and turnaround

  • Standard: $69 per page, PDF within 24 hours.
  • Express: $139 per page, PDF within 1 hour for orders paid 8am–8pm, Monday to Saturday (Sydney time) with a clear and complete photo or scan. If we miss the 1-hour delivery time, the express surcharge ($70 per page) is refunded automatically.

FAQ

Which birth certificate should I translate, copie intégrale or extrait? The one the authority asks for. For a visa, a copie intégrale is usually the safer choice because it includes the marginal notes.

Can I hire a car in Australia with my French licence? Most rental companies ask for an English translation or an International Driving Permit with a licence that is not in English. Check your rental company's conditions before you travel.

Do you translate Canadian and Swiss documents? Yes, and Belgian, Luxembourgish and African documents in French.
