What do you need it for?
| Your situation | Is our translation suitable? |
|---|---|
| Driving in Australia on your overseas licence (visitor or temporary resident) | Yes. States ask you to carry an English translation or an International Driving Permit with your licence. |
| Hiring a car | Usually yes. Check your rental company's conditions. |
| Transferring to a Victorian licence (VicRoads) | Yes. VicRoads accepts translations by NAATI translators. See Victoria |
| Transferring to a Queensland licence (TMR) | Yes. TMR asks for a translation by a NAATI translator. See Queensland |
| Transferring to a WA licence | Yes. See Western Australia |
| Transferring to a SA licence | Yes, including NAATI digital stamps. See South Australia |
| Transferring to a NSW licence (Service NSW) | No. Service NSW only accepts Multicultural NSW, the Home Affairs Free Translating Service, or the Korean/Taiwanese consulate. |
| ACT, Tasmania, NT | Check with your local licensing authority before ordering. |
Whether you also need tests to transfer depends on the country that issued your licence: see which overseas licences convert without a test and the translation rules state by state.
Rules change. The licensing authority makes the final decision, so check their website if in doubt.
Is it free anywhere?
Possibly. If you hold an eligible permanent or humanitarian visa granted in the last 2 years, the Department of Home Affairs Free Translating Service may translate your licence for free. It is not available to visitors, working holiday makers, or most temporary visa holders. We are the option when you are not eligible, or when you need it today.
What you get
- English translation of every field on your licence, including categories, conditions and dates.
- Certification statement, translator name and NAATI practitioner number.
- The translator's NAATI digital stamp, verifiable online.
- PDF by email, ready to print.
