What our translator checks
- Simplified or Traditional characters: mainland documents use Simplified, Taiwan and Hong Kong documents use Traditional.
- Names in the order of your passport: Chinese puts the family name first. We spell names in pinyin as they appear in your passport, so the translation matches your other documents.
- Taiwanese (Minguo) years: documents from Taiwan often count years from 1912. Year 113 of the Republic is 2024 (add 1911). The translation gives the Gregorian date.
- Stamps and seals: red seals and stamps are described and translated where legible.
- Licence categories: the vehicle classes on a Chinese licence (准驾车型, such as C1) are kept and explained.
Driving in Australia with a Chinese licence
If your licence is not in English, carry an English translation with your original licence when you drive or hire a car. To transfer to an Australian licence, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia accept translations by NAATI translators. From 31 October 2026, Western Australia also recognises licences from Taiwan for its transfer arrangements (source: transport.wa.gov.au). Check the rules of your state for your situation.
Transferring to a NSW licence? Service NSW does not accept our translations for licence transfers.
When you don't need a translation
Some Hong Kong and Taiwanese documents are issued in both Chinese and English. If every part of your document is already in English, you may not need a translation: check with the authority you are submitting to.

FAQ
Do you translate both Simplified and Traditional Chinese? Yes, from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, into English.
How do you write my name in English? As it appears in your passport. Tell us the spelling when you order, so every translation matches.
How are Taiwanese Minguo years converted? Add 1911 to the year of the Republic. For example, year 113 is 2024. The translation shows the Gregorian date.
Can I hire a car with my Chinese licence and your translation? Many rental companies ask for an English translation of a licence that is not in English, but each company and each state sets its own rules. Check with your rental company before you travel.
Is the translation accepted for my visa? The Department of Home Affairs asks for documents not in English to be translated. If you apply from Australia, the translation must show the translator's NAATI practitioner number. Our translations are certified by NAATI-certified translators.
