Bikram Sambat dates: how we convert them
Most Nepali documents are dated in Bikram Sambat (BS), which is about 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar (AD). The months of BS do not have a fixed length, so a date cannot be converted with a simple subtraction: our translator uses a day-by-day conversion table and gives the exact AD date. A date that is one day off can create problems in a visa application, so this step matters.
What our translator checks
- Both sides of the citizenship certificate, including the photo page details and the issuing office.
- Names as in your passport, so the translation matches your other documents.
- Ward and municipality names spelled consistently across your documents.
- Stamps and handwritten notes, translated where legible.
When you don't need a translation
Some Nepali documents are issued in both Nepali and English. If every part of your document is already in English, you may not need a translation: check with the authority you are submitting to.

FAQ
How do you convert BS dates to AD? With a day-by-day Bikram Sambat conversion table. BS is about 56 years and 8 months ahead of AD, but the exact date depends on the length of each BS month, so it is never a simple subtraction.
Do I need to translate both sides of my citizenship certificate? Yes, if both sides contain text. Upload both sides and we translate everything that is legible.
My document is in Nepali and English. Do I need a translation? Only for the parts that are not in English. If the whole document is already in English, check with the authority whether a translation is needed.
Is the translation accepted for my student or skilled visa? The Department of Home Affairs asks for documents not in English to be translated. If you apply from Australia, the translation must show the translator's NAATI practitioner number. Our translations are certified by NAATI-certified translators.
