Common mistakes

  • Adding 621 to every date: from January to the end of Esfand, add 622 instead.
  • Mixing up the Solar Hijri calendar of Iran and Afghanistan with the lunar Hijri calendar of Arabic-speaking countries.
  • Reading Persian digits (۱۴۰۴) as other characters: check each digit of the year.

FAQ

When does the Persian year start?

On 1 Farvardin, the day of Nowruz, around 20 or 21 March. For example, 1 Farvardin 1404 was 21 March 2025.

Can I convert a Persian year by adding 621?

Only roughly. From 1 Farvardin to 31 December the Gregorian year is the Persian year + 621; from 1 January to the end of Esfand it is + 622. For an exact day, use the converter.

Do Afghan documents use the same calendar?

Yes. Afghan documents such as the tazkira use the Solar Hijri calendar too, with the same years and months, although some month names differ in Dari.

Is the Solar Hijri calendar the same as the Islamic lunar calendar?

No. The Solar Hijri calendar follows the solar year; the lunar Hijri calendar used in Arabic-speaking countries is about 11 days shorter each year. Our document date converter handles both.
