What our translator checks
- Era dates: Japanese documents often count years by era (Reiwa from 1 May 2019, Heisei from 8 January 1989, Showa before). We convert every date to the Gregorian calendar; you can check one with our date converter.
- Names in the order of your passport: family name first in Japanese; we use the romanisation of your passport.
- Koseki entries: every entry of the register (birth, marriage, address changes) is translated, not summarised.
Licence and visa rules in short
- Licence transfer: Licences from Japan are on the Austroads list of recognised jurisdictions: they can be transferred to an Australian licence without tests (other conditions apply). If the licence is not in English, the transfer still needs an English translation. See which licences convert without a test.
- NSW: for a NSW licence transfer, only the Free Translating Service and Multicultural NSW are accepted, not private translations such as ours. See what NSW accepts.
- Visas: if you apply from Australia, Home Affairs asks for the translator's NAATI practitioner number on each translation, which ours show.

FAQ
Which koseki do I need, tōhon or shōhon? The full copy (tōhon) shows everyone in the register; the extract (shōhon) shows only some people. Translate the one the authority asks for.
How do you convert Reiwa or Heisei years? Year 1 of Reiwa is 2019 and year 1 of Heisei is 1989; the translation gives the exact Gregorian date.
Can I hire a car with my Japanese licence? Japan issues International Driving Permits under the 1949 convention; many visitors carry one. Without it, rental companies usually ask for an English translation of the licence.
